6.5 Disability Census in Gaza
In collaboration with the Qatari Red Crescent and the Palestinian Red Crescent, PCBS conducted a disability
census in the Gaza Strip during the second quarter of 2012, with funding from Her Highness Sheikha Mozah
Bint Nasser Al Missned - Fakhoura Campaign of the State of Qatar and the Islamic Development Bank - Jeddah.
The aim of this census was to provide comprehensive statistical data on individuals with disabilities, to identify
their needs and future requirements and to make institutions operating in the field of disabilities aware of these
data in order to develop plans and programs relevant to the situation and reality on the ground.
Following the signing of the agreement between PCBS and the Qatari Red Crescent to implement the census, a
national committee was formed to develop survey tools and adopt indicators for the implementation of the census.
This committee comprised 16 governmental and non-governmental organizations working with individuals
with disabilities, PCBS, the Qatari Red Crescent and Palestinian Red Crescent societies.
Two training sessions were held: the first to train trainers and the second to train field workers. The first phase of
the project was launched to collect data from the field on 02.06.2012 and ended in the first week of July 2012, as
well as the completion of the data auditing , data coding, data entry and data verification in the first half of the
month of December 2012,. This was followed by a desk audit and coding of questionnaires, data entry and the
cleaning and verification of data. A total of 634 employees worked on this project as field workers, supervisors,
coordinators, auditors and data coding workers.
