Press Release on the Results of the Labour Force Survey

(January- March, 2016)  Round

 

Main Results

 

 

 

The labour force participation rate of persons aged 15 years and above was 45.8%

 

The number of persons participating in the labour force in Palestine was 1,326,700 in the 1st  quarter 2016:فىفاع فال; 834,300 in the West Bank and 492,400 in Gaza Strip.

 

The labour force participation rate in the West Bank was 45.5% and 46.4% in Gaza Strip, the gap in the participation rate between males and females in Palestine still very big where it reached 71.6% for males compared with 19.4% for females.

 

26.6% the unemployment rate among labour force participants

 

Using ILO standards, the number of unemployed was 352,800 in the 1st quarter 2016; distributed as 202,800 in Gaza Strip and 150,000 in the West Bank.

 

The unemployment rate in Gaza Strip was 41.2% compared with 18.0% in the West Bank in the 1st quarter 2016.  And the unemployment rate for males in Palestine was 22.3% compared with 42.8% for females in the 1st quarter 2016.

 

The highest unemployment rate in the 1st quarter 2016 was 43.0% among youth aged  20-24 years. For years of schooling, the highest unemployment rate among females with 13 years of schooling and more was 48.1%.

 

Decreased the number of the employment in the local market between the 4th   quarter 2015 and 1st  quarter 2016

 

The number of employed in the local market decreased from 864,500 in the 4th quarter 2015 to 856,900 in the 1st quarter 2016. The number of employed persons in the West Bank decreased by 1,400 employed, and the number of employed persons in Gaza Strip decreased by 6,200 employed person.

 

The services sector was the biggest employer in the local market with 34.2% in the West Bank and 55.1% in Gaza Strip.

 

The public sector employed 22.7% of those in employment: 37.4% in Gaza Strip and 16.4% in the West Bank.

 

The average daily wage for wage employees in the West Bank was 99.8 NIS compared with 61.8 NIS in Gaza Strip.

 

The average weekly hours worked by wage employees in the West Bank was 44.7 in the  4th quarter 2015 compared with 43.9 in the  1st quarter 2016. The average number of days worked per month was 22.6 and 22.5 day over the same period.  The average number of hours worked per week in Gaza Strip remains was 37.4 and 38.1  hours per week in the 4th quarter 2015 and  1st quarter 2016, while  the average number of days worked per month remains the same level 22.4 and 22.3 working day in 4th  quarter 2015 and 1st quarter 2016.

 

Number of employed in Israel and Israeli settlements was 114,000 in the 1st quarter 2016

 

The number of employed persons employed in Israel and Israeli settlements was 114,000 in the 1st quarter 2016 compared with 115,200 in the 4th quarter 2015. Of these, 62,900 had a permit, 38,400 worked without any permit and 12,700 employed persons have an Israeli identity card or foreign passport.

 

The number of employees in the Israeli settlements decreased from 26,300 in the 4th  quarter 2015 to 21,700 in the 1st quarter 2016.

 

64.8% of employed in Israel and the Israeli settlements worked in the construction sector.

 

The average daily wage for the wage employees in Israel and the Israeli settlements reached 212.5 NIS in the 1st  quarter 2016 compared with 200.6 NIS in the 4th quarter 2015.

 

The average number of hours worked per week in Israel and the Israeli settlements reached 40.3 in the 1st quarter 2016 compared with 41.2 in the 4th quarter 2015. The average number of days worked per month reached 19.8 working day the 1st quarter 2016 compared with 19.1 in the 4th quarter 2015.

 

Employment Status in the 1st quarter 2016

68.6% of employed persons are wage employees: 64.1% in the West Bank compared with 79.1% in Gaza Strip.

 

19.5% of employed persons are self- employed; 21.8% in the West Bank and 14.1% in Gaza Strip.

 

6.3% of employed persons are unpaid family members; 7.2% in the West Bank and 4.1% in Gaza Strip.

 

5.6% of employed persons are employers: 6.9% in the West Bank and 2.7% in Gaza Strip.

Working benefits for wage employees in the private sector

 

27.3% of wage employees are hired by contract (9.8% of them with limited period and 17.5% with unlimited period), compared with 52.6% hired without any contract, and 20.1% of wage employees are hired by collective agreement\ oral.

 

22.9% of wage employees contribute to a pension fund, 23.0% have annual paid leave and 40.3% of wage employees women have paid maternity leave.

 

20.6% of employed persons in Palestine are affiliated to a workers vocational union: 14.6% in the West Bank and 34.7% in Gaza Strip.

 

38.8% of wage employees in the private sector received less than the minimum wage (1,450 NIS) in Palestine.

 

In the West Bank about 19.3% of wage employees in the private sector received less than minimum monthly wage, about 39,500 wage employees with average monthly wage 1,067 NIS.

 

In Gaza Strip the percentage of wage employees in the private sector who received less than the minimum monthly wage was 75.0% about 82,900 wage employees with average monthly wage 725 NIS.

 

Child Labour

4.1% of children aged 10-17 years in Palestine  are employed: 5.4% in the West Bank and 2.2%  in Gaza Strip.

 

Data collection of labour force survey  was funded by the European Union.
