 Main Results

The labour force participation rate of persons aged 15 years and above was 45.8%

The number of persons participating in the labour force in Palestine was about 1,249,100 in the 2nd quarter 2014:; about 804,600 in the West Bank and about 444,500 in Gaza Strip.

 

The labour force participation rate in the West Bank was 46.4% and 44.7% in Gaza Strip, the gap in the participation rate between males and females in Palestine still very big it reached 71.7% for males compared with 19.4% for females.

26.3% the unemployment rate among labour force participants

Using ILO standards, the number of unemployed was 328,800 in the 2nd quarter 2014 compared with 328,000 in the 1st quarter 2014; distributed as 200,400 in Gaza Strip and 128,400 in the West Bank during 2nd quarter 2014

The unemployment rate in Gaza Strip increased from 40.8% in the 1st quarter 2014 to 45.1% in the 2nd quarter 2014 while it decreased in the West Bank from 18.2% to 16.0% during the same period.  And the unemployment rate for males in Palestine was 22.8% compared with 39.6% for females in the 2nd quarter 2014.

The highest unemployment rate in the  2nd quarter 2014 was 43.1% among youth aged    20-24 years. For years of schooling, the highest unemployment rate among females with 13 years of schooling or more was 53.1%.

 

The highest unemployment rates in the West Bank governorates was in Bethlehem with 19.4%. In Gaza Strip, the highest unemployment rate was in Deir ALBalah with 55.8%.

 

According to the relaxed definition of unemployment in Palestine, the unemployment rate decreased from 29.3% in the 1st quarter 2014 to 28.9% in the 2nd quarter 2014.

The number of employed in the local market decreased from 814,600 in the 1st quarter 2014 to 804,200 in the 2nd quarter 2014. The number of employed persons in the West Bank increased by 7,400 employed, while the number of employed persons in Gaza Strip decreased by 17,800 employed.

 

The services sector was the biggest employer in the local market with 32.3% in the West Bank and 56.6% in Gaza Strip.

The public sector employed 22.4% of those in employment: 41.0% in Gaza Strip and 15.6% in the West Bank.

 

The average daily wage for wage employees in the West Bank was 90.7 NIS compared with 61.4 NIS in Gaza Strip.

The average weekly hours worked by wage employees in the West Bank was 44.2 per week in the 1st quarter 2014 compared with 44.7 in the 2nd quarter 2014. The average number of days worked per month increased from 21.9 to 22.7 over the same period.  The average number of hours worked per week in Gaza Strip was 38.3 hours per week in the 1st quarter 2014 compared with 37.3 in the 2nd quarter 2014, while the average number of days worked per month remained at the same level 23.9 days over the same period.

Number of employed in Israel and Israeli settlements about 109,400 in the 2nd  quarter 2014

The number of employed persons from the West Bank employed in Israel and Israeli settlements was 109,400 in the 2nd quarter 2014 compared with 110,300 in the 1st quarter 2014. Of these, 57,600 had a permit, 38,000 worked without a permit and 13,800 employed persons have an Israeli identity card or foreign passport.

Increased the number of employees in Israeli settlements from 23,200 in 1st quarter 2014 to 24,200 in 2nd  quarter 2014.

60.6% of employed in Israel and Israeli settlements work in the construction sector.

The average daily wage for persons employed in Israel and Israeli settlements reached 184.3 NIS in the 2nd  quarter 2014 compared with 182.6 NIS in the 1st  quarter 2014.

The average number of hours worked per week reached 43.4 in the 2nd  quarter 2014 compared with 43.1 in the 1st quarter 2014. The average number of days worked per month reached 20.2 days compared with 19.8 days in the same period.

66.6% of employed persons are wage employees: 63.5% in the West Bank compared with 75.3% in Gaza Strip.

19.7% of employed persons are self- employed; 20.2% in the West Bank and 18.1% in Gaza Strip.

7.1% of employed persons are unpaid family members: 8.7% in the West Bank and 3.0% in Gaza Strip.

6.6% of employed persons are employers: 7.6% in the West Bank and 3.6% in Gaza Strip.

Working benefits for wage employees in the private sector

26.3% of wage employees are hired by contract (8.8% of them with limited period and 17.5% with unlimited period), compared with 52.8% hired without any contract.

19.1% of wage employees contribute to a pension fund, 20.4% have annual paid leave and 37.6% of wage employees women have paid maternity leave.

26.7% of employed persons in Palestine are affiliated to a workers vocational union: 14.6% in the West Bank and 60.2% in Gaza Strip. 

37.0% of wage employees in the private sector receive less than minimum wage (1,450 NIS) in Palestine.

In the West Bank about 24.3% of wage employees in the private sector who received less than minimum monthly wage about 53,600 wage employees with average monthly wage 1,037 NIS. the large number of those who received less than minimum monthly wage are in the northern governorates of the West Bank about 26,900 person with average monthly wage 1,084 NIS, followed by southern governorates of the West Bank about 17,500 with 949 NIS.

In Gaza Strip the percentage of wage employees in the private sector who received less than minimum monthly wage was 70.4% about 58,600 wage employees with average monthly wage 689 NIS. the large number of those who received less than minimum monthly wage are in northern governorates of Gaza Strip about 35,500 person with average monthly wage 735 NIS, followed by middle governorates of Gaza Strip about 16,200 with 665 NIS.

4.1% of children aged 10-17 years are employed

4.1% of children aged 10-17 years are employed: 5.9% in the West Bank and 1.4% in Gaza Strip.
