Press release by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and Ministry of Detainees and Ex-detainees on the occasion of the 17th of April - Palestinian Prisoners Day.

 

Since its occupation of Palestine in 1967, Israeli authorities have systematically violated the most basic rights provided by international and human rights conventions through inhumane treatment, restrictions on movement, killings without trial, deportation and detention.

 

Since 1967 Israel has arrested more than 805 thousand Palestinians

Data from the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees and Ex-detainees showed that since 1967 Israel has arrested more than 805 thousand Palestinians: more than 82 thousand were arrested since the Al-Aqsa Intifada. Since October 18, 2011 (the day of the Shalit prisoner of war exchange) 10 thousand Palestinians have been detained. The data also show that 30 of current detainees were arrested prior to the Oslo Agreement and have been in Israeli jails since that time, It was supposed to be released within the fourth installment in 29/03/2014.

 

Around 5 thousand Palestinians detained in Israeli jails

There are around 5 thousand Palestinians in detention. Of these, 19 detainees are female, 200 are children and 11 are members of the Palestinian legislative Council (Parliament). The data also indicated that more than 185 Palestinians held under administrative detention (without trial) remain in detention. The data also indicate that there are 476 detainees serving life sentences (for life). The data show that Israel arrested 3,874 detainees during the year 2013, 75 detainees are female, 931 are children, It is noteworthy that Israel arrested nearly a thousand detainees since the beginning of the current year.

 

1.4 thousand detainees suffer from serious illnesses

Data indicated that about 1,400 detainees suffer from serious illnesses of various types.  Israel does not provide them with the necessary medical care, treatment and medicines in the appropriate timeliness, exacerbating their suffering, make up more than a quarter of the total number of detainees. The lives of all detainees are in danger.

 

205 deaths in Israeli jails and detention centers

Since 1967, 205 Palestinians have died in Israeli jails due to torture, denial of health treatment or deliberate killing, 82 of them since 2000.  There were 123 deaths among detainees during the period from 1967 to 2000, constituting about 60% of detainee deaths, This is in addition to the hundreds of detainees who were died after their liberation from jail affected by the disease he inherited through detention, torture and medical neglect.
