PCBS Release A statistical Data about Land Use in the Palestinian Territory, 2001- 2002

Agricultural land Formed 25.2% of the Total Land Area in the Palestinian Territory

PCBS release a statistical data about land use in the Palestinian Territory, aimed at provide data about land use, and show the situation of land use in the Palestinian Territory for 2001 and 2002, where the data represent the basic statistics about different land uses indicators in the Palestinian Territory, such as the land area by type of land use, population density, activity density, number of Israeli settlements, change in land use and land value.

Results show that the agricultural land in 2002 is mainly comprised of land cultivated with permanent crops, which constituted 77.9% of the total agricultural land, and 78.6% in 2001. In 2002, 89.3% of the total agricultural land is rain-fed whereas in the previous year it was amounted to 89.2%.

The population density in the Palestinian Territory in 2002 increased to about 576 capita\ km2, while it was about 548 capita\ km2 in 2001. Results show that Gaza governorate was considered the most densely populated governorate in 2002, where the population density was reached about 6,033 capita/ km2 . However, Jericho governorate was considered the least densely populated governorate, where the population density was reached about 66 capita\ km2. Area of permanent agricultural land per capita in the Palestinian Territory was decreased to 341m2 in 2002, from 356 m2 in 2001.

Results show that the percentage of agricultural land area per km2 of the total area in 2002 in the Palestinian Territory is 25.2%, compared with 24.8% in 2001. Yield of irrigated and rain-fed agricultural land in the Palestinian Territory were about 4,191 ton\ km2 and 254 ton\ km2 respectively. The production value of agricultural land is increased to about 334 thousand US $\ km2, where it was 288 thousand US $\ km2 in 2001.

Results show that there are 171 Israeli settlements in the Palestinian Territory, of which 154 settlements in the West Bank, and 17 settlements in Gaza Strip. Most of these settlements were concentrated in Jerusalem governorate, at 32 settlements.

According to the number of natural reserves, There are no changes in the data compared with the previous year, in which there are 19 natural reserves with 54 km2 in the West Bank, and these natural reserves concentrated in Hebron governorate with an area of 29 km2.
