Main Results

The labour force participation rate of persons aged 15 years and above was 45.8%

 The number of persons participating in the labour force in Palestine was about 1,273,100 in the 4th quarter 2014:فىفاع فال; about 818,200 in the West Bank and about 454,900 in Gaza Strip.

The labour force participation rate in the West Bank was 46.4% and 44.9% in Gaza Strip, the gap in the participation rate between males and females in Palestine still very big it reached 71.6% for males compared with 19.4% for females.

26.5% the unemployment rate among labour force participants

Using ILO standards, the number of unemployed was 336,900 in the 4th quarter 2014 compared with 359,400 in the 3rd quarter 2014; distributed as 194,700 in Gaza Strip and 142,200 in the West Bank during 4th quarter 2014

The unemployment rate in Gaza Strip decreased from 47.4% in the 3rd quarter 2014 to 42.8% in the 4th quarter 2014, also it decreased in the West Bank from 19.2% to 17.4% during the same period.  And the unemployment rate for males in Palestine was 23.8% compared with 36.5% for females in the 4th quarter 2014.

 

Unemployment Rate Among Participants in the labour Force by Region, Q4-2012- Q4-2014

The highest unemployment rate in the 4th quarter 2014 was 45.6% among youth aged    20-24 years. For years of schooling, the highest unemployment rate among females with 13 years of schooling or more was 47.1%.

The highest unemployment rates in the West Bank governorates was in Bethlehem with 22.7%. In Gaza Strip, the highest unemployment rate was in Deir ALBalah with 49.9%.

According to the relaxed definition of unemployment in Palestine, the unemployment rate decreased from 32.0% in the 3rd quarter 2014 to 29.1% in the 4th quarter 2014.

 

Increased the number of the employment in the local market between the 3rd quarter  and 4th quarter 2014

The number of employed in the local market increased from 771,400 in the 3rd quarter 2014 to 827,700 in the 4th quarter 2014. The number of employed persons in the West Bank increased by 21,800 employed, and the number of employed persons in Gaza Strip increased by 34,500 employed.

 

The services sector was the biggest employer in the local market with 31.8% in the West Bank and 58.4% in Gaza Strip.

The public sector employed 22.9% of those in employment: 39.6% in Gaza Strip and 16.5% in the West Bank.

The average daily wage for wage employees in the West Bank was 91.4 NIS compared with 66.1 NIS in Gaza Strip.

The average weekly hours worked by wage employees in the West Bank was 44.3 per week in the 3rd quarter 2014 compared with 43.4 in the 4th quarter 2014. The average number of days worked per month increased from 22.6 to 22.9 over the same period.  The average number of hours worked per week in Gaza Strip was 38.1 hours per week in the 3rd quarter 2014 compared with 37.2 in the 4th quarter 2014, while the average number of days worked per month increased from 23.8 working day in the 3rd quarter 2014 to 24.0 working day in the 4th quarter 2014.

 

Number of employed in Israel and Israeli settlements about 105,200 in the 4th   quarter 2014

The number of employed persons from the West Bank employed in and Israeli settlements was 105,200 in the 4th quarter 2014 compared with 104,200 in the 3rd quarter 2014. Of these, 62,800 had a permit, 27,800 worked without a permit and 14,600 employed persons have an Israeli identity card or foreign passport.

The number of employees in the Israeli settlements decreased from 20,600 in 3rd quarter 2014 to 20,200 in 4th  quarter 2014.

63.5% of employed in Israel and the Israeli settlements worked in the construction sector.

The average daily wage for the wage employees in Israel and the Israeli settlements reached 194.2 NIS in the 4th  quarter 2014 compared with 189.2 NIS in the 3rd  quarter 2014.

The average number of hours worked per week reached 41.9 in the 4th  quarter 2014 compared with 41.8 in the 3rd quarter 2014. The average number of days worked per month reached 19.8 working day compared with 20.0 working day in the same period.

 

Employment Status in the 4th quarter 2014

67.3% of employed persons are wage employees: 64.2% in the West Bank compared with 75.2% in Gaza Strip.

19.5% of employed persons are self- employed; 20.4% in the West Bank and 17.1% in Gaza Strip.

7.0% of employed persons are unpaid family members; 8.3% in the West Bank and 3.9% in Gaza Strip.

6.2% of employed persons are employers: 7.1% in the West Bank and 3.8% in Gaza Strip.

Working benefits for wage employees in the private sector

 

27.1% of wage employees are hired by contract (10.0% of them with limited period and 17.1% with unlimited period), compared with 53.9% hired without any contract.

19.9% of wage employees contribute to a pension fund, 20.7% have annual paid leave and 29.9% of wage employees women have paid maternity leave.

30.2% of employed persons in Palestine are affiliated to a workers vocational union:

19.2% in the West Bank and 58.6% in Gaza Strip.

 34.5% of wage employees in the private sector received less than the minimum wage (1,450 NIS) in Palestine.

In the West Bank about 22.9% of wage employees in the private sector received less than minimum monthly wage, about 51,600 wage employees with average monthly wage 1,012 NIS. the large number of those who received less than minimum monthly wage are in the northern governorates of the West Bank about 28,700 person with average monthly wage 1,043 NIS, followed by the southern governorates in the West Bank about 18,600 with 952 NIS average monthly wage.

 

In Gaza Strip the percentage of wage employees in the private sector who received less than the minimum monthly wage was 62.8% about 58,000 wage employees with average monthly wage 730 NIS. the large number of those who received less than the minimum monthly wage are in the northern governorates of Gaza Strip about 31,300 person with average monthly wage 770 NIS, followed by the middle governorates of Gaza Strip about 20,000 with average monthly wage 707 NIS.

 3.2% of children aged 10-17 years are employed

3.2% of children aged 10-17 years in Palestine  are employed: 4.5% in the West Bank and 1.2% in Gaza Strip.
