Abstract
The census results reveal that the total number of establishments in the Remaining West Bankand Gaza Strip is 132,874 with 94,205 of them in the Remaining West Bank (70.9%) and
38,669 in Gaza Strip (29.1%).
The total number of operating establishments in the Remaining West Bank and Gaza Strip is
116,804, distributed as 82,871 in the Remaining West Bank and 33,933 in Gaza Strip; 3,657
are completely closed establishments; 2,796 of them in the Remaining West Bank and 861 in
Gaza Strip. The total number of establishments under preparation is 638; 498 of them in the
Remaining West Bank and 140 in Gaza Strip. The total number of auxiliary units is 6,645;
4,818 of them in the Remaining West Bank and 1,827 in Gaza Strip, and temporarily closed is
5,130 ; 3,222 of them in the Remaining West Bank and 1,908 in Gaza Strip.
Hebron governorate has the highest number of establishments with 17,661, followed by
Nablus governorate with 14,582 establishments and Gaza governorate with 14,053. Jericho
and Al-Aghwar governorate has the lowest number of establishments with 1,388
establishments.
90.6% of the enumerated establishments belong to the private sector while 5.0% are
governmental sector, 3.3% are non governmental organizations. The establishments belonging
to local authorities, UNRWA and international organization constitute 1.1%.
The census results indicated that the main economic activity of 54.0% of the establishments is
wholesale, retail trade and repairs, while 14.0% of the establishments is manufacturing .
The total number of persons engaged in establishments that are operating in the private sector,
non governmental organization sector and government companies is 296,965 in the
Remaining West Bank and Gaza Strip, 81.4% of them are males and 18.6% are females,
70.6% of the workers in establishments are in the Remaining West Bank while 29.4% are in
Gaza Strip.
The results of the census indicated that the total number of establishments in 2007 increased
by 13.4% compared to the 2004 census, and by 34.1% compared to the 1997 census.
The total number of establishments increased in all economic activities except construction
activities and electricity and water supply activities, which decreased with 10.9%, 6.5%
respectively compared to the 2004 census, while the largest rise was in mining and quarrying
activities, which rose by 41.7%.

The aim of the Establishment Census is listing of all establishments in the Remaining West Bank and Gaza Strip, and building a new updated establishment register classified according to the main economic activity. The main objectives of the census are:1. To collect data on the distribution of establishments by economic activity and governorates.
2. To provide data on employment size in the establishments by economic activity and sex.
3. To provide data on the characteristics of the establishments in the Remaining West Bank and Gaza Strip such as: economic organization, legal status and ownership.

Geographic Coverage
The Establishment 2007 Census covers all the establishments in the Remaining West Bank and Gaza Strip according to the International Standard Industrial Classification of all economic activities.The West Bank excluding those parts of Jerusalem which were annexed by Israel in 1967.
The Palestinian Territory have been divided into 16 governorates, namely: Jenin, Tubas,Tulkarm, Nablus, Qalqilya, Salfit, Ramallah and Al-Bireh, Jericho and Al-Aghwar,Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, North Gaza, Gaza, Deir Al-Balah, Khan Yunis, and Rafah.
The number of localities in all governorates was 558 localities, including 525 localities in theWest Bank, and 33 localities in Gaza Strip. These localities were divided into 4,916 enumeration areas including 3,286 enumeration areas in the Remaining West Bank, and 1,630
enumeration areas in Gaza Strip.
